Real Madrid striker, ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ has won the ‘FIFA Best Player Award’ beating rival ‘Lionel Messi’ and French forward, ‘Antoinne Griezmann’ to the inaugural award.
The Portuguese forward who won the Ballon d'Or in December 2016 becomes the first player to win the newly rebranded award which was presented at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich.
The 31-year old expressed his delight at winning the inaugural award.
"It was my best year so far. The trophy for Portugal was amazing. I was so happy and of course I cannot forget the Champions League and the Club World Cup. We ended the year in the best way. I'm so glad to win a lot of trophies, collective and individual. I'm so, so proud".
Ronaldo picked up 34.54% of the total votes while Lionel Messi picked up 26.42% and Antoinne Griezmann with 7.53%.
United States, ‘Carli Lloyd’ picked up the ‘FIFA Best Female Player’ award with Leicester City's manager, ‘Claudio Ranieri’ picking up the ‘Best Male Coach’ award and ex-German boss, ‘Silvia Neid’ picking up the ‘Best Female Coach’ award.
Penang's ‘Mohd Faiz Subri’ also picked up the ‘FIFA Puskas’ award for the best goal in 2016.
